LogoWorks has an awesome business model and they give small business owners a way to get a professionally designed logo at a decent price, but as you've pointed out, you can also find a designer on your own and maybe even save a few dollars. Design is such an objective discipline (it's an art form), I find that opinions of quality regarding logos vary so much it's incredible. It's not uncommon for 50% of the world to love a logo and the other 50% hate it. Normally, the better direction you give (in terms of style, colors, etc), the happier you will be with the results. If you say "surprise me" or "give me a cool logo", you will probably be disappointed with the end product. By the way, I like the bottom version of the first concept.
